A vacation home can be difficult to keep track of when you are not there every day. A focused inventory helps you remember what is furnished, what is stored for the season, and which supplies or equipment need attention before the next visit.
Begin with room-by-room photos
Take wide photos of living areas, bedrooms, kitchen cabinets, outdoor spaces, garages, and storage rooms. Then capture individual photos of large or distinctive items such as furniture sets, appliances, electronics, outdoor equipment, and seasonal furnishings. A room overview gives the inventory useful context.
Use locations that work when you are away
Record specific locations such as “guest-room closet, upper shelf” or “garage, left storage cabinet.” Simple, consistent names make it easier to find a spare key, linen bin, tool case, or appliance document without needing to remember exactly where it was left.
Separate everyday items from seasonal supplies
- Keep furniture, appliances, electronics, and kitchen equipment in regular room records.
- Group linens, outdoor cushions, holiday items, and cleaning supplies by labeled bin or cabinet.
- Record tools, garden equipment, grills, and outdoor accessories with their storage location.
- Attach receipts, manuals, warranty documents, or service notes you want to retain.
Review before closing up and returning
Before leaving for a long period, update locations for items moved to storage and make a note of any equipment that needs repair or replacement. At the start of a new stay, a quick walk-through can confirm what is present and highlight anything that needs to be restocked.
