Home Inventory Checklist: What to Track in Every Room

Published June 24, 2026 · 7 min read

A useful home inventory is not just a list of expensive items. It is a structured record of what you own, where it is, what it is worth, and what proof you have.

The Simple Rule: Photo, Value, Location, Proof

For most household items, you only need four pieces of information: a clear photo, an estimated value, the room where the item is kept, and any supporting proof such as a receipt, serial number, warranty, or appraisal.

Living Room

  • TVs, soundbars, speakers, consoles, streaming devices
  • Sofas, chairs, tables, shelves, lamps, rugs
  • Artwork, decor, collectibles, books, media equipment
  • Remote controls and accessories for expensive electronics

Kitchen

  • Large appliances: refrigerator, dishwasher, oven, microwave
  • Small appliances: coffee maker, blender, mixer, air fryer
  • Cookware, knives, dinnerware, glassware, specialty tools
  • High-value pantry equipment or wine collections

Bedroom and Closet

  • Mattress, bed frame, dressers, nightstands, lamps
  • Clothing by category: coats, suits, shoes, bags, formalwear
  • Jewelry, watches, sunglasses, accessories
  • Personal electronics, chargers, headphones, tablets

Home Office

  • Laptops, monitors, keyboards, cameras, microphones
  • Printer, scanner, storage drives, networking equipment
  • Desk, chair, shelves, books, office accessories
  • Software licenses, subscriptions, and business equipment

Garage, Storage, and Outdoor Areas

  • Power tools, hand tools, toolboxes, ladders
  • Bikes, scooters, sports equipment, camping gear
  • Lawn equipment, grill, patio furniture, seasonal decor
  • Stored boxes with labeled contents and estimated values

What Not to Over-Document

Do not spend ten minutes documenting a $9 item. Group low-value items when it makes sense: "kitchen utensils," "winter clothes," "bathroom supplies," or "holiday decorations." Save detailed records for items that are expensive, hard to replace, or important to prove.

How Often to Update Your Checklist

Update your inventory whenever you buy something significant, sell or donate items, move, renovate, or once a year during a quick walkthrough. The best inventory is one you can maintain without friction.
