Moving Home Inventory Checklist: Track What You Pack

Published June 24, 2026 · 6 min read

Moving is one of the best times to create a home inventory. You are already touching every item you own, deciding what to keep, and packing by room.

Why Make an Inventory Before You Move?

A moving inventory helps you avoid lost boxes, document the condition of expensive items, estimate the value of your belongings, and unpack faster. It is also useful if a moving company damages or loses something.

Before Packing

  • Walk room by room and photograph major items before they are packed
  • Record serial numbers for electronics, appliances, bikes, and tools
  • Estimate values for furniture, electronics, instruments, and equipment
  • Attach receipts or warranties where you have them
  • Decide what to sell, donate, recycle, or discard

During Packing

Give every box a short label that includes room and contents. For example: "Kitchen - cookware - box 3" or "Office - cables and drives - box 2." Photograph open boxes before sealing them if they contain valuable or hard-to-remember items.

High-Value Items to Track Separately

  • Laptops, monitors, cameras, tablets, and audio gear
  • Jewelry, watches, art, collectibles, and instruments
  • Power tools, bikes, sports equipment, and outdoor gear
  • Designer bags, formalwear, and high-value clothing
  • Documents, external drives, and business equipment

When the Movers Arrive

Take photos of furniture and electronics before loading. Capture scratches, dents, existing damage, and cable setups. If anything arrives damaged, you will have a before-and-after record that is much easier to use than memory alone.

After the Move

  • Mark boxes as unpacked by room
  • Update item locations in your inventory
  • Delete items you sold or donated before the move
  • Add new furniture, appliances, or home office equipment
  • Export a fresh inventory once everything is settled

Moving Inventory Template

At minimum, track: item name, room, box number, photo, estimated value, condition, and notes. For valuable items, add receipt, serial number, model number, and warranty information.
