Emergency Supply Inventory: Organize Home Preparedness Kits

A home preparedness kit is easier to use when you know what it contains and where it is stored. A simple inventory gives each kit a clear location, records larger equipment, and creates an easy routine for checking items that change over time.

Make a record for each kit or storage area

Start with the places where supplies are kept: a hallway closet, pantry shelf, garage cabinet, vehicle bag, or basement bin. Give each kit a short name and photograph the outside label plus the contents. This makes it easier for everyone in the household to find the right supplies without opening every container.

Group supplies by their purpose

Use simple groups such as lighting, power, water, first aid, food, sanitation, warmth, communications, and pet supplies. List quantities for items you buy in multiples, then use a brief note for the rest. The goal is a useful overview, not an unnecessarily detailed list of every small object.

Photograph equipment and labels

• Flashlights, lanterns, radios, chargers, and backup batteries
• Portable power stations, generators, cables, and adapters
• First-aid kits, fire extinguishers, and other household safety equipment
• Water containers, coolers, and storage bins
• Product labels, manuals, and relevant service records for larger devices

Use review notes for time-sensitive items

Some supplies need occasional review because they are consumed, expire, or have batteries that require attention. Add a simple note such as “check in October” or “replace after use” rather than relying on memory. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the care and use of any equipment.

Keep locations specific

Location details should be practical: “pantry, lower shelf,” “garage, cabinet beside door,” or “car trunk, black bag.” If a kit is moved, update the same entry. This prevents a preparedness record from becoming stale after a household reorganization or move.
