Renovation projects quickly spread across rooms, garages, sheds, and temporary storage. A simple inventory helps you see what has arrived, where it is kept, and which details belong with each item before boxes and packaging disappear.

Start with the items that are hardest to identify later

Photograph unopened materials, fixtures, appliances, and tools as they arrive. Capture labels, model names, quantities, finishes, and any identifying numbers visible on the packaging. Add a plain-language note such as “hall bathroom vanity” so the record still makes sense months later.

Use locations that match the project

Give every entry a current location: kitchen, garage shelf, rented storage unit, contractor staging area, or the room where it will be installed. When material moves, update the location instead of creating a duplicate. This makes it easier to find a spare tile, fixture box, or specialty tool when the project is underway.

Keep purchase documents with the item record

Save a photo or scan of the receipt, invoice, or order confirmation.
Note the store, order date, and any return or warranty paperwork you want to keep.
Record the finish, size, or item code for materials that look similar.
Photograph packages before disposing of labels or cartons.

Separate project supplies from permanent home items

Some supplies are consumed during the work, while fixtures and appliances remain with the home. Mark this distinction in your notes. Once a project is complete, retain useful records for installed items and move reusable tools into your regular home inventory.

Photograph material labels, fixtures, tools, and boxes.
Add quantities, identifying details, and the current storage location.
Attach receipts, invoices, and relevant paperwork.
Update entries when items are moved, installed, returned, or used up.
